Religious leaders are tasked with the responsibility of speaking to the present day questions, issues, and concerns of our communities through the lens of our religious traditions. As we navigate the year’s election season, we, along with our communities, are compelled to ask ourselves: 1. How do our religious beliefs and practices inform how we engage in our civic society? 2. How does my vote, grounded in my religious convictions, impact me and other members of the society? 3. What do our religious traditions have to say about democracy and civic engagement? 4. How can our religious communities come together to promote and cultivate a multireligious democracy where every person can flourish? Drawing on Howard Thurman’s "Democracy and the Soul of America," we will address some of these questions and explore how we are engaging our congregations around issues of democracy, civic engagement, and interreligious collaboration.

About the Presenter

The Rev. Dr. Alisha Wimbush

The Rev. Dr. Alisha Wimbush is the ICJS program director for religious leaders. She has a B.A. in Social Work from Messiah College and is a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, where she earned both her M.Div. and a Th.D. in Pastoral Care and Counseling. Most recently Alisha served as an Associate Chaplain at a continuing care retirement community in Pennsylvania. She has more than 15 years of experience working and providing leadership in nonprofit and congregational settings. She is passionate about building bridges across diverse communities and finding creative ways to foster relationships.
