What We Do
ICJS Spring Mini-Course
Open to friends and members of the ICJSYou Shall Subdue the Earth (Gen. 1:28)
A Jewish-Christian Dialogue
on the Environment
A course taught by
Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin
in conversation with
Rosann M. Catalano, Ph.D.
How do we imagine our relationship with the earth? Are we to understand ourselves separate and apart from it? one with it? superior to it? responsible for it? all of the above? What are the different ways in which Genesis 1:28 has been interpreted? How has the understanding of that verse contributed to the ways we behave toward nature today? What is the difference between "nature" and "creation"? How do our traditions' environ-mental values differ from those that guide America's land use, water use, and consumer habits today? In these sessions, we will explore the fundamental values that undergird Jewish and Christian regard for nature. We will look at the texts, stories, poetry, agricultural laws, and virtues that inform our traditions' environmental mes-sages and see how they can inspire us to lead more environmentally sacred lives.
