Sacred Arguing: A Conversation Between Jews and Christians
Rabbi Ilyse Kramer, ICJS Educator
This mini course explores the tradition of mahloket (conflict and debate) as it applies to Interfaith Dialogue, Discussion, and Study.
What are the implications of having multiple and diverse opinions purposefully codified and preserved in talmudic literature, known as 'Mahloket'? How does one learn to disagree within one's community and do so with integrity and respect? How does a community respond to diversity of opinion and real difference, without turning those who disagree into 'the other' and/or label them as outside of the community?
Herein lies a deep teaching embedded within Jewish tradition that attempts to preserve an approach to difference of opinion that is fluid and open to diversity, as well as open to uncertainty of truth. Sacred Arguing works as a category best, when the differing parties agree--not only to disagree; but in addition, to remain in relationship with one another. How can this Mahloket tradition help Jews and Christians engaged in interfaith dialogue?
Day and evening sessions are available.
