Jerusalem on Earth and In Heaven: The City and its Hold on the Religious Imagination of Jews and Christians
Adam Gregerman, Ph.D., ICJS Jewish Scholar
Not long ago Jerusalem celebrated its 3000-year anniversary since its founding as King David’s capital. Following his daring conquest and expansion of an old Jebusite stronghold, the city came to occupy a pre-eminent place in Israelite life. Though repeatedly razed and rebuilt, it remained a political and religious center, and was the site of many major events in Judaism and Christianity. Its actual importance waxed and waned, but it never lost its hold on the imagination. Jews and Christians recalled the great events of the past, and drew on a rich collection of images about the city as the site of the messianic banquet, the dwelling place of God, and a veritable heaven-on-earth. Join us as we explore both the actual history of the city and the colorful traditions that emerged in religious writings about this remarkable place.
